Book The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It: The Complete Back-to-Basics Guide Review :

The premise of this book is that you can feed your family on a small farm through animal husbandry and the proper cultivation and rotation of crops. The system promotes a model where most of the farm inputs are created on the farm. Crops are grown for animals, animal waste fertilizes the land, fertile land produces good crops, and repeat. The bulk of the book has excellent advice for growing plants (vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, and herbs), including soil and climate; soil treatment; propagation; care while growing; pests and diseases; and harvesting. It has only two pages on nuts! The chapters include several pages on when to plant and means of extending planting times via hot/cold frames, greenhouses, cloches, etc.The second largest section is on animal husbandry, including what livestock to buy, and how to feed, house, and butcher them. This is the author's view of a cow that has just calved: let the calf feed for three days and then take it away. Then he writes, "She, after perhaps a night of bellowing for her calf, accepts the situation. She is not human, has a very short memory, and soon accepts you as her calf substitute." Cows have been known to cry for weeks looking for their calves, and when later reunited, they recognize each other's bellows. Dairy is not a health food (despite the propagandizing that has been going on for decades) and this makes me shake my head in embarrassment for our species' callous regard for these animals' welfareThere's not much in the way of soil development other than vigorously promoting animal waste as fertilizer. Remaining chapters offer information on saving energy; heat from the sun; power from water and wind; canning; making dairy products; making bricks and tile; wood and stone working; pottery; knotting; basketry; spinning and the like. The chapters are quite sparse, not enough to really accomplish these things, but they do give you ideas and you can research them further.Overall, my favorite chapters were on the vegetables because they offer a lot of experienced tips for caring for these plants. But I don't recall reading anything about hardiness zones, which is an important consideration for those new to gardening. The book has a very "dated" feel to it. It was written long ago, and it occasionally gets a little update, a new ISBN, and more sales of new books. This book has the same amount of pages (according to Amazon) of the 100th edition printed in 2009. Frankly, I would buy an older version to save some money.
This book is basically an encyclopedia, and really should be labeled as such. It has everything, but nothing in great detail, and because it's based on the original 1970s version, a lot of stuff is arguable. But for someone like me just trying to get their feet wet, it's a great starting point for me to figure out what areas i want to do MORE research in.Theres several spots where the diagrams dont make sense or the text really needs a diagram. And the vegetable index is pretty, but i feel like it's just filler. On the whole, like i said, if you want to read about a little bit of everything, this is perfect. But this should by no means be the ONLY book you consult.
