There are so many errors in this book it is bordering on dangerous for students to use (pg 231 says parking lots can be 20% slope). They will have to unlearn some of this to be effective in a landscape architecture job. I have the 2nd edition and despite being published in 2009, they reference guidelines that were several editions out of date from 1998 (like the AASHTO green book). It's sloppy with charts it used other sources for and I found so many inconsistencies between this book and what it referenced I stopped using the charts. Then it shows some without citing a source and that makes me worried since there were errors where they did have citations. The writing and instruction screams of someone who has been in a classroom and not in practice for way too long. The way stormwater was glossed over quickly when it is generally the driving factor around much of a sites design is disappointing. It stated getting an NPDES permit is simple by filling out an easy NOI form. That process takes 9 months to a year, minimum and requires lots of reports and supporting calculations and coordination with conservation districts and state DEP regulations. It can be 30% of my project design budget. I have 16+ years in civil/site engineering and landscape architecture jobs with over 1000 jobs under my belt, theory is vastly different than execution. This book is good if you want to teach landscape architecture incorrectly, not actually be one. I purchased this book as one of the recommended readings for the LARE exams; although it contains useful & pertinent information, I am astonished with the poor quality of the paper and the grainy black & white images... this is intended as a reference manual for designers, right? Across both my education and professional experience, I have never seen any type of presentation with black and white graphics. More surprising still, is the fact that you can purchase Dirr's Encyclopedia which has full color quality pictures across several hundred pages for less than half the price of this book. I do recommend this book for those who are taking the LARE exams but am disappointed with the lack of visual & material quality for the price.
